EM Federal Corporation was subcontracted to bring about the
successful assessment and removal of an extensive amount of
research laboratory equipment from a contract research laboratory
for the DOD. Four principle hazard concerns existed at the
laboratory: radiological, chemical, explosive and bacteriological.
Chemical and explosive hazards were present due to the research
conducted at this facility. Radiological and bacteriological
concerns were present as artifacts on equipment transferred
to this facility from another laboratory closure situation.
The transferred equipment had been minimally assessed for
hazards and much of that information was not available. Equipment
ranged in size and contamination from small glassware with
blood-borne contamination to 4,000 pound environmental chambers
with various contaminants. EM Federal provided the principle
resource support in the area of explosive materials assessment
and management as an extensive facility closure plan was prepared.
The facility closure plan was prepared to fully comply with
federal, Commonwealth of Virginia, and Fairfax County environmental,
safety and fire statutes. Equipment has to be assessed for
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Toxic Substances Control
Act, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act regulated
